Warm Apple Berry Crumble
British fruit crumble became a household staple when wartime kitchens swapped full pastry for a thrifty streusel top. Here, spiced apples and mixed berries bake under a buttery oat-walnut crumble until bubbling and golden.

Ingredients
- 4 cups sliced mixed baking apples
- 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen mixed berries
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp fresh lemon zest
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup diced cold unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/4 tsp kosher salt
- optional vanilla yogurt or cream for serving
Instructions
- 1Preheat the oven to 375°F and butter a 2-quart baking dish or deep 9-inch pie plate so the fruit juices do not stick.
- 2In a large bowl toss the apple slices and berries with granulated sugar, cornstarch, lemon zest, lemon juice, and cinnamon until the fruit looks evenly coated and slightly glossy.
- 3Tip the fruit mixture into the prepared dish and spread it into an even layer so every scoop gets both apple and berry.
- 4For the topping, stir together the flour, oats, brown sugar, walnuts, and salt.
- 5Add the cold diced butter and rub it in with your fingers until the mixture forms irregular clumps ranging from sand to small pebbles.
- 6Scatter the crumble topping generously over the fruit, covering most of the surface while leaving a few berry pockets visible.
- 7Bake 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is crisp and golden-brown and the fruit juices bubble thickly at the edges.
- 8If berries release a lot of liquid early, continue baking until the juices look syrupy rather than watery.
- 9Rest the crumble 10 minutes on a cooling rack so it firms just enough to spoon cleanly without running.
- 10Spoon into bowls while still warm and finish with a spoonful of vanilla yogurt or cream for a crowd-friendly weekend dessert.
