Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper so the little soot sprites have a soft landing.
  2. 2In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt until the mixture looks like fine dark earth after rain.
  3. 3In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with the dark brown sugar and granulated sugar until the mixture is pale, fluffy, and smells like a warm hearth, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. 4Crack in the egg and pour in the vanilla extract, then beat again until everything is silky and fully blended.
  5. 5Tip the dry cocoa mixture into the butter bowl and stir gently with a wooden spoon just until no floury streaks remain; the dough should feel soft and slightly sticky like forest soil.
  6. 6Fold in the dark chocolate chips so they hide throughout the dough like tiny glowing eyes.
  7. 7Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough, roll them lightly between your palms into little round sootballs, and space them 2 inches apart on the prepared sheets.
  8. 8Bake one sheet at a time for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges look set and the tops are matte with a few gentle cracks; the centers should still feel soft when lightly pressed.
  9. 9Let the cookies rest on the hot sheet for 5 minutes so they firm up, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. 10Once cool, dust them lightly with powdered sugar through a fine sieve so each soot sprite wears a soft ash-like veil.
  11. 11Serve stacked on a wooden board under a tree or beside a cup of barley tea for maximum cozy magic.
