Ingredients

  • 2 cups seedless red or black grapes
  • 3 medium tart apples such as Granny Smith
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup chopped toasted pecans
  • optional vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly butter a 9-inch cast-iron skillet or similar baking dish.
  2. 2Halve the grapes and peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges about 1/4-inch thick.
  3. 3In a large bowl toss the grapes and apple slices with the lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch until every piece is coated and the mixture looks slightly glossy.
  4. 4Spread the fruit evenly in the prepared skillet, scraping any remaining juices from the bowl over the top.
  5. 5In a separate bowl combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt.
  6. 6Cut the cold butter into small cubes and rub it into the oat mixture with your fingertips until clumps form and no dry flour remains.
  7. 7Stir the toasted pecans into the topping, then scatter the mixture evenly over the fruit so it covers most of the surface.
  8. 8Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is deep golden and crisp and the fruit juices bubble thickly the edges.
  9. 9If the topping browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  10. 10Remove from the oven and let the crisp rest for 10 minutes so the juices thicken slightly.
  11. 11Spoon into bowls while still warm.
  12. 12Top each serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream if you like.
