Ingredients
- 4 medium honeycrisp apples
- 1 1/2 cups red seedless grapes
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 pinch pinch of fine sea salt
Instructions
- 1Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly butter a 9-inch baking dish so the fruit will caramelize without sticking.
- 2Halve the apples lengthwise and use a spoon to carefully scoop out the cores and a little of the flesh to create shallow wells, leaving the bottoms intact.
- 3Toss the apple halves with lemon juice right away so they stay bright and do not brown while you prep the rest.
- 4In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter with maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt until the mixture is fragrant and glossy, about 2 minutes.
- 5Arrange the apple halves cut-side up in the prepared dish and nestle the whole grapes and inside the wells.
- 6Spoon the warm spiced butter mixture evenly over the apples and grapes, letting it pool in the centers and drip onto the fruit.
- 7Scatter the chopped walnuts over the top for crunch and place the dish in the oven.
- 8Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, until the apples are tender when pierced with a knife tip and the grapes have softened and released some juices.
- 9If the tops need more color, broil for the final 1 to 2 minutes, watching closely so the nuts do not burn.
- 10Remove from the oven and let the dish rest 5 minutes so the syrup thickens slightly.
- 11Spoon extra pan juices over each serving and serve warm as a simple fruit dessert.
