French Toast

French Toast

Despite its name, French toast is a beloved American breakfast staple with roots in thrifty lost-bread traditions. Thick slices soak in a cinnamon-vanilla egg custard, then sizzle in butter until golden and get a drizzle of maple syrup.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick-cut white bread or brioche
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup

Instructions

  1. 1In a shallow baking dish or wide bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined and smooth. This is your custard base.
  2. 2Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  3. 3Add butter to the skillet and let it melt, swirling to coat the surface evenly.
  4. 4Dip bread into the custard mixture, soaking both sides for about 10-15 seconds per side. Do not oversoak or the bread may fall apart.
  5. 5Place the soaked slices in the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until deep golden brown and cooked through.
  6. 6Repeat with remaining butter and bread slices, working in batches to avoid crowding the pan.
  7. 7Serve immediately with warm maple syrup drizzled on top. Optional: dust with powdered sugar or add fresh berries if desired.
