Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for dusting
  • 2 tbsp edible black sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper so the soot sprites have a soft landing. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter with both sugars until the mixture looks pale and fluffy, three full minutes with a hand mixer.
  2. 2Beat in the egg and vanilla until the batter turns glossy and fully combined, scraping the bowl sides so no streaks remain. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and sea salt together over the wet mixture.
  3. 3Fold the dry ingredients in gently with a spatula until just combined; the dough should feel soft and dark like forest soil after rain. Stir in the mini chocolate chips so little sparks of sweetness hide inside each ball.
  4. 4Scoop tablespoon-sized portions and roll them between your palms into perfect little spheres, placing them two inches apart on the prepared sheets. Gently press a tiny pinch of black sesame seeds onto the top of each ball to suggest soot-sprite eyes and feet.
  5. 5Bake one sheet at a time for 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges look set and the tops are matte rather than shiny; the centers should still feel slightly soft when touched. Cool the cookies on the sheet for five minutes so they firm up without crumbling.
  6. 6Transfer carefully to a wire rack and let them cool completely, twenty minutes, until they hold their round soot-ball shape. Dust lightly with powdered sugar through a fine sieve for a soft pastel moonlit glow.
  7. 7Arrange the cookies on a rustic wooden board or pastel plate as if they just tumbled out of a boiler room chimney. Serve warm with a cup of meadow tea so the chocolate chips stay melty and comforting.
  8. 8Store leftovers in an airtight tin lined with parchment; they keep their whimsical shape for three days at cool room temperature.
